Quick and Creative Halloween Costume Ideas

Quick and Creative Halloween Costume Ideas
By Katie Miserany

The pile of Halloween party invitations sitting on your desk doesn't have to be sinister-there are plenty of simple costume ideas that will make your evening easy and eerily inexpensive!

Next time you receive a Halloween party invitation from a close friend in the mail, consider dressing up like the party's host for a funny, unexpected twist-often all you need is a wig, a distinctive outfit and a good sense of humor!

Also, if you are as paper-obsessed as everyone here at Tiny Prints, you can use old Halloween party invitations and other social stationery to make your costume. Use a copy machine to enlarge the Halloween invitation itself and wear it like a big sign, telling everyone that you are the "prints" or "prints-ess" of the party. Or you could just stick Halloween invites all over your body and tell everyone you are a deck of cards!

When Halloween party invitations encourage you to bring a guest, it's a golden opportunity to don devilishly delightful duo costumes. Depending on the tone of the event set by the Halloween invitation, you and your date can dress up like easily recognizable celebs, literary characters or household items. Salt and pepper are popular choices, as are the signature looks of celebrity pairings like Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes. If the Halloween party invitation sets a more playful tone, women can channel their inner fairy tale princesses by dressing up like Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty, and men can go with characters like Bert and Ernie or Bart Simpson and Milhouse.

No matter what creative costume you choose, a little imagination and a lot of style will surely make this one happening Halloween!

Top 5 Terrifically Terrifying Halloween Party Themes!

Top 5 Terrifically Terrifying Halloween Party Themes!
By Katie Miserany

Halloween doesn't have to be all scares and no style. If you send Halloween party invitations early enough for guests to prepare, you can plan a spectacularly spooky soirée without recycling clichéd costumes and tired themes.

Send Halloween party invitations for a "TV Fright Night" themed party. Decorate different rooms with ideas from terrifying television shows-a strobe light and swirling decorations for a "Twilight Zone" room, caution tape and a masking tape body outline for a crime show room, or cardboard coffins, crosses and garlic for a vampire slayer room. Then, use your Halloween party invitations to let guests know to dress up like their favorite TV stars!

Another great idea is to host a "Monster Mash Bash," with Halloween party invitations explaining that guests should wear costumes like their favorite monsters-Frankenstein, King Kong, Pokémon, mothers-in-law-and include in the Halloween invitations that you'll feature monster munchies like lady fingers, mud pie and gooey gummy worms.

For family festivities, send Halloween party invitations for a "Mummy & Daddy Party." Set the tone with an eerie Egyptian tomb theme, then supply rolls of inexpensive toilet paper for parents to turn their little ones into mummies-or vice versa.

You can also add a fun twist to your party with a "Freaky Friday" theme. Indicate on your Halloween invitations that guests should dress up like someone else attending the party, whether it's a date, a close friend who is also attending, or you-Halloween's happening host!

Finally, a fabulous way to celebrate is with a "Hollywood Horror" party. Find a chic Halloween party invitation that's red carpet ready, and then decorate the house with movie posters, martini glasses, a Hollywood Hills sign-anything that reminds you of Los Angeles and movie making. Be sure to indicate on the Halloween invitation that everyone should dress up like celebrities, too, then snap a surprise paparazzi picture of each guest right when you open the door!

With a little creativity, unique decorations and the right Halloween party invitations, this year's festivities can be your best Halloween bash yet!

Halloween is Scary - The Economy is Scary - Which One is More Scary? Is Either of Them Real?

Halloween is Scary - The Economy is Scary - Which One is More Scary? Is Either of Them Real?
By Dr. Tom Kessinger, D.C.

Happy Halloween!

My two year old son walks around saying, "Halloween Scary!" Every time I hear it I laugh. This time of year can be scary. He sometimes is scared of the dark, and scared of giants. Some of those kid's shows can be a little frightening.

Let me tell you something that I am afraid of. Well, I used to be afraid of it. Not anymore. I am brave, now.

When I was young I lived on a small farm. We had goats, chickens and pigs and other animals. We had a huge garden. One day my whole family was in the garden. I was little and wondering around.

Then out of no where this rooster came toward me flapping his wings and making this awful screeching noise. The noise reminds me of an ironing board opening. Oh, it's so awful.

There I was small, vulnerable, and scared to death. I turned and ran. I ran to the safest place I could think of - My Dad. He was on the other end of the garden. I be-lined it to him.

He heard the awful noise and looked up. He saw me running. As I reached him he picked me up and swung me around to the other side. Just then this ugly, big rooster ran by flapping its wings. This thing was so close to over powering me.

I don't know what would have happened if my Dad didn't help me.

Many years later, my wife and I were discussing fears with a nephew. He was afraid of spiders. My wife quickly pointed out how I was afraid of chickens. They all laughed. Then he asked, "Were you attacked?"

I had to answer, "Almost."

My wife roared with laughter. She said, "You have been scared all these years and you weren't even touched by the chicken!"

I had to answer, "I guess, I wasn't even touched!"

My wife tells this story a lot. I have to admit it is kind of silly.

There are a lot of things to be scared of right now. The ghost and goblins. All the scary movies coming out this time of year. Witches, monsters, the dark, and Dracula. I have to ask you - what of these scare things have touched you?

There is another more real issue that we are dealing with at this time of year. October is a crazy month in the history of our country and the world. It was Bono from U2 that said in a song, "October kingdoms rise and kingdoms fall, but you go on."

Okay, so I like U2 and some of the lyrics. This time of year we are looking at a change in our kingdom or our president. This scares me a little.

Another scary thing is our economy. Oh, I think the media is killing this issue. It was October 29, 1929, "Black Tuesday" when the stock market crashed. This event started what we call "The Great Depression."

Again, in October there was a day that is called "Black Monday." This was on October 19, 1987. What happened here was the largest fall in the stock market since "The Great Depression." What happened after? Nothing really. People kept working and doing business. It wasn't much later that we had a huge economic growth in the United States.

I lived in Brazil for two years during an economic crisis. The whole country was churning and the value of the money spiraled downward. It was completely crazy. On Monday, I had a 100 Cruzeiros (Brazilian currency) that was worth about $1, and on Sunday that same 100 Cruzeiros could not buy me a bus ride worth $ 0.26.

I saw real poverty. I saw people work hard for absolutely nothing. I saw people live really poor. I saw people who were happy.

One of the first days in Brazil I walked down a dirt road and I saw chickens walking around. Multiple chickens. I was scared. I jumped a lot until I got used to them being around me. Then, I wasn't scared so much. I'd jump if a chicken snuck up behind me every once in a while, but it wasn't bad.

I learned that chickens were more scared of me than I was of them! I wonder if that is how my son is with Halloween. He might think it is scary right now. Oh, but after he gets his candy. He will love Halloween.

Maybe, somehow, that is how we are with this economy. After the elections are over and things settle down with the media (they are always trying to scare us), maybe just maybe things will go well like they did in 1987. Not much will happen and we will all prosper.

Then again, maybe it will be like "The Great Depression." Oh, scary! If it does we will just work hard, live poor, and be happy. "The Great Depression" created a group of people that is called "The Greatest Generation." I know some of these individuals. They work hard, they lived poor, but they were happy. They are a great generation.

One last thing about fear, I heard a man of the greatest generation, "We don't take council from our fears. Don't let fear dictate your decisions."

Halloween is Coming - Do You Know of a Haunted Place?

Halloween is Coming - Do You Know of a Haunted Place?
By Michael DeVries

A friend recently told me about a friend of hers who sent her an instant message that said, "the ghost is back." Not having been aware that her friend had ever had a ghost, my friend inquired further and learned that about six months ago things had started appearing in different places in her home than where she'd left them. Finally out of exasperation she'd asked the ghost to leave after about a month and it did so.

Now, it's back ...

And the host surmises that the uninvited guest is a female apparition cause she's a tidy freak. Dishes left on the kitchen counter one night were in the sink the next morning. Disheveled stacks of paper are straightened. Things are just generally tidied up. It usually happens overnight which led her to accept that she was sleep walking, but on this visit, she has found things changed when she arrives home from work. She also occasionally sees movement out of the corner of her eye but nothing's there when she focuses on the area.

When asked what she plans to do, my friend's friend said "I'll put up with it for a month or so, then I'll ask it to leave again. It was cooperative last time."

Last time, she also checked to see if anyone had died in her house or on the site of her home but can find no record of such a demise that might account for the occasional ghostly visit.

The visits also don't coincide with any particular time of year or season, so it's not just the approach of Halloween that has inspired the latest encounter.

This friend of a friend is not alone, either. A 2005 Gallop poll reported that three out of four Americans believe in some kind of paranormal occurrence. Those beliefs include ghosts, witches, and haunted houses. The things of Halloween.

According to a CBS News report October 18, this year, one in five Americans told CBS News pollsters they have seen a real-life ghost in some form. And, according to the article, whether or not they've seen one, even more Americans believe that ghosts actually do exist.

The article goes on to say, "Nearly half of Americans say they believe in ghosts, or that the dead can return in certain places and situations.

"Women are more likely to say they believe in ghosts than are men: 56 percent of women believe, while 38 percent of men do. More than half of younger Americans aged 18 to 45 believe in ghosts; those over 45 are less likely.

"More than one in five Americans says they have seen a ghost themselves, or have felt themselves to be in the presence of one."

So, our friend's friend is not alone. And as evidenced by part of the history of Halloween, this upcoming day for costumes, candy, and coming together for parties, had at least part of its origins as All Hallows Evening in that realm between the living and the dead. The ancient Gaels believed that on October 31, the boundary between the living and the dead dissolved, and the dead became dangerous by causing problems such as sickness or damaged crops.

We suspect most of the ghosts, goblins, and witches, our shoppers are going to see this Halloween will be of the costumed variety ringing door bells and yelling "Trick or Treat" or just coming to join you at a party.

Give them something different. Like pretzels, popcorn, candy, and other snacks from our online catalog. Order now for on time delivery.

Your party guests might even have so much fun they'll help you tidy up the place when it's over. ;)
